Northern Life

  • Dipping in the cold dark.

I do know better, really I do. Something I've been meaning to do for awhile now, actually since before the Christmas Bird Count, is take a trip down past the St George Society Cliffs, out to Nuvua and search for Gyrfalcons. Prior to last winter I believed, and had been led to believe that Gyrfalcons

  • Prizes and surprises

I meant to get a post up yesterday on prizes for the Nunies, but life intruded. It turned into one of those days that kept having different things popping up, intruding on my best laid plans. It was the kind of day that saw me do my morning Yoga at 11:30 last night. It wasn't,

  • Resolve

We're now a couple of days into 2010, and traditionally this is the time for reflection and resolutions. Really it is an arbitrary moment in time that we decide to honour this way, but we are a species that likes clean, arbitrary divisions. Species continue to confound our attempts to define them exactly, trying to

  • Fortune favours the prepared

I've written in the past on the traditions at New Years here, so I won't go into a lot of detail.  The Reader's Digest version is: Games; Church Service ending at midnight; countdown to midnight, followed by a lot of handshaking and tears; fireworks and/or guns being fired by the Rangers; a parade of snowmobiles

  • The swing

Yesterday was the Winter Solstice, and now the sun has begun its journey back to the Arctic. The reality, of course, is the tilt of the earth has now started to swing around to our favour, but the sun beginning a journey sounds, better. This photo was taken around 1:30 this afternoon. I had to

  • Malaise

I've entered into some sort of unsettled mood of late.  It isn't a depression (I know the photos are "darker" but really I'm just playing in Aperture and this seemed as good of a post as any to put them up in) for I'm happy and joking. But I don't seem to do anything. I've

  • Do I miss the Sun?

Not really.  Here's the sky from about 12:40 this afternoon.

  • My daughter’s eyes.

Yesterday afternoon I took the kids to school. Usually, when we arrive I say the same thing I always do to Travis "Have fun, learn lots" and he bolts for his entrance. Hilary, because she is in pre-school only goes in the afternoon, and only every second day. I carry Hilary to the closest entrance.

  • Colour

One of the great things about the start of the Dark Season is that we pretty much have continual sunrise/sets from the moment the sky lightens. In good conditions it is a constantly changing, all "day" light show.  Here is the start this morning, with a waning crescent moon thrown in for good measure.

  • A shot in the dark

The H1N1 immunization team came to town this weekend, for a mass immunization that is running for two days (yesterday and today). We were scheduled for our shots last night at 8:15pm. I have to say that the procedure they had in place was a model of efficiency and kudos should be going out to
