Well, the results are in from our count from yesterday and I’ll list all the species seen below:
Raven
Whew. The count was actually down from last year but we’ll see what today brings. I would doubt that there are less ravens around then before. Strangely, there were no ravens at the dump. None, nada, zero. But it was late in the day and there didn’t seem to be much there as it looks like they must have burnt and bulldozed on Friday. Most of the action was around the dog teams and we saw sixty-seven in total there. I’m almost willing to bet that no other observer in the GBBC could be looking through the binoculars at Ravens and have a team of dogs pulling a komotik come into view.
So far there has been zero participation in the GBBC in Nunavut apart from myself. I know last year there were counts in Iqaluit and Cambridge and perhaps elsewhere. I haven’t had much reviewing work to do thus far.

I grinned when I was doing my backyard counts the last couple of days, thinking of you and wondering if you’d find more than Ravens. And I wished, as I tried to count around 55 Mourning Doves and 40 House Finches, that there was only one of each of the species I counted. In the summer, the dove population increases to around 150 and the finches to about 100, so I guess I’m fortunate it’s cooler here now. All the best …

I saw three ravens. I was watching for a snowy owl who, rumour has it, is lurking about here but without a sighting. In unrealted news, my mayor brought in a polar bear. Do they count as birds though?
We had a raven or two visit the hamlet over the last couple of weeks–not during the GBBC though. I’d love to see 67 ravens, and the dog team too!
Thanks Pam in Tucson. Ravens are pretty cool birds, and I never tire of them. Although I must say, watching Roadrunners hunting songbirds would be pretty wild. Cool pictures.

I don’t think polar bears have quite been classified as birds yet mike, although there may be a couple of listers who are lobbying for it. Interestingly enough I’ve yet to see a snowy owl up here. There are areas where they are plentiful, I’ve just never been there.
The ravens are so much fun to watch Pamela, and the dog teams have been really active this year. Everyone gearing up for the big race (Nunavut Quest) in April
