Today the sun begins its journey back into our lives here in the North. The next six weeks will see the twilight lengthen noticeably every day until February 6th, when we’ll get our first glimpse of the sun in three months.
Right now, as I get ready to go to the house, the sky is a silky blue-black, filled with stars, so close that you could reach out to them. Already there is a faint glow on the horizon. This was our darkest night of the winter, and it arrived before I even realized. I think I’ll go out and savour the dark and the stars.
Update: I had wanted to post a photo showing our light at noon on the solstice but the sky turned cloudy by lunch time. So here is a photo from 1:00 pm today, the 22nd, about as bright as it gets on our darkest day.

Happy Midwinter! Enjoy the darkness while it lasts…
Happy solstice. We await the return of the sun, as well.
What a beautiful, serene pic. I must admit that I find your comfort in darkness …well, comforting.
Very nice. For those of us who haven’t lived it, it’s hard to imagine not seeing the sun for such a long time.
