Leah’s family got back today from a long weekend out on the land. We drove over to Victor Bay to pick them up. We could see them coming down the bay, and as they neared it was clear they were going to go to the other side of a small point that juts out there.
When we drove over there and over the slight rise we saw all these snowmobiles and komatiq parked on the ice. Usually you don’t see them all in one place like this. I counted over thirty sleds.

What? That’s it? What was going on? Fantastic image–I’d advise people to click on it to see it full size. What a landscape! (But beware: it looks to me like they’re all on crappy ice, and in spite of what I’ve learned about sea ice, that makes my palms sweat.)
Has anyone caught any Narwhales yet?
Nothing going on really. That’s where they’ve parked their equipment as they’ve come back from being out on the land. As it happens this is the easiest place this year to get gear onto the shore. And the ice is quite good there. There are foreshore cracks, as always which accounts for the water in the foreground. The water in the back ground are pools of meltwater. The ice here is, I assure you, perfectly safe. It does look, however, as though the ice in Arctic Bay proper is going to break up early this year. Could go any day, and normally it goes in the middle of July.
There have been a few Narwhals taken Ida. The weather has been pretty poor, which has been hampering things somewhat.
Hey Clare, it’s Nancy the nurse here- Daphne told me you had a blog so I came to check it out. Great pics! I’ve looked at some of your archives, I’ll be copying down a recipe or two!
Hate to rub it in, but the weather down here in Ottawa is exquisite since I got back. I usually prefer to be in the arctic in summer, but after all that rain in Arctic Bay, the consistent 20 degree temps with just the odd thunderstorm have been agreeing with me completely!
So, when you say “Out on the land” in this case do you mean out on the ice?
Interesting about the ice in Arctic Bay–down here everything seems to be about two weeks early too….
So that’s what a crowded parking lot looks like up there? That’s a fabulous photo – looks like a painting. How deep is the ice?
Great photo!
Hi Nancy,
Yeah I’m jealous for the nice weather. I’m sick of rain, and none of my clients can get in. Looking forward to your return in August.
Hi Pamela, yes, “Out on the Land” here means anywhere out of town. In this case my in-laws were out on the sea ice, seal hunting. They had no luck.
Hi Pam. Yep a parking lot just like at the mall. Normally the sea ice gets about 3-4 feet thick during the winter. A little less now.
Thanks Larry
