It may come as a surprise to those who know me only through this blog, but I am a major Kevin Smith (View Askew Films) fan. I think I’ve enjoyed (and own) all of his films (okay Mallrats is a stretch), films such as Clerks, Chasing Amy (my personal favourite), Dogma, Jersey Girl etc.
I’ve recently found out that Kevin Smith has a blog, My Boring-Ass Life. Reader Discretion is advised, may contain objectionable language, strong opinions, references to Degrassi, and talk about man-crushes.
* Smith plays the character Silent Bob in many of his films.

Clare,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I am a huge Kevin Smith fan too. Being from Jersey, it’s sort of required. He spoke at my college when Chasing Amy came out. He was really funny. I pass by the Quick Stop from Clerks every time I go birding at Sandy Hook – one of my favorite birding spots.
Overall Mallrats is not as good as some of the others, but it does have an exterior shot of a shopping mall a few miles from where I grew up.
I’ve heard that he is pretty funny in person as well as his writing Patrick. I’ve yet to see Clerks II but I understand the Quick Stop burns down?
I read somewhere before that Smith felt bad about how he portrayed Jay and Silent Bob in Mallrats and that Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was his way of rewarding them?
Kevin Smith, Bruce Springsteen, great bloggers and birding, and now this news.. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7143597.stm
Jersey seems like a great place.
I like him too though I have to admit I’ve only seen Clerks and Dogma. (LOVED Dogma!)
I saw him on “Dinner for Five” and thought he was hilarious.
I’ve been reading News Askew since before Jay and Bob Strike Back.
Wait until “Zack and Miri make a Porno”, he’ll finally break 30 million a picture, with Seth ROgan and all.
Clare, if you haven’t seen them yet, you might enjoy “An Evening with Kevin Smith”. It was so popular there was even a sequel, “Evening Harder.” It’s Smith standing up in front of an audience, they ask questions and he answers them…in the most long-winded, hilarious, off-topic, off-colour way possible. At least one of the Q&A’s was set in Toronto.
I think you would get a kick out of it, but after the kids were tucked into bed
Clare,
You def need to see Clerks II. There is some burning, but not the real thing. It’s alive and well in Leonardo, NJ. I don’t think RST Video is there though.
Thanks for the suggestions Craig. I saw the ad for Evening Harder and wondered what it was about. The tricky part is “after the kids are tucked into bed”. Hilary generally doesn’t nod off until 4am ish and I’m not sure how much longer I could stay awake after that.
Clerks II is apparently at the Northern Store Patrick, so I’ve asked Leah to bring it home one of these days.
I use the JAckson 5 scene from that movie to get my baby to sleep. I won’t ruin the scene for you, but you’ll know it when you see it. There are more camera moves in that one scene than in all of his first three flicks.
And check out the Dora the Explorer rant on “An Evening Harder”… I agree with Smith, Swiper has it coming.
Alright, now I’m going to order it. Even though I think Swiper is just misunderstood, and would flourish under positive attention instead of the negative attention he seeks.
Patrick’s talking about driving by the Quick Stop reminded me of my favourite movie scene recognition. I was watching a (rather obscure, I believe) film called “Full of It” and suddenly there is a scene of the girl working at the Bridge Drive Inn, and it is the actual Bridge Drive Inn in Winnipeg (go if you’ve never been). I ate a lot of ice cream there in my day.
