I know that several of my readers are Tim Horton's fans. Timmy's is by far the biggest purveyor of coffee in Canada and has skillfully positioned itself as a Canadian Icon. The inestimable Julie Craves knows far more about coffee than I ever will. In fact, now that I think of it she knows far more about most things than I ever will, such is the cross I bear. While checking out her latest post at Coffee and Conservation (and if you are a fan of coffee and care about the environment you MUST read this blog, regularly. Seriously it isn't an option.) I found a link to a year old post about Tim Horton's and the environment. Very much worth a read, although the info is a year old and things may have changed (although I suspect not).

Well, the one thing she fails to mention is that the ubiquitous Tim Hortons cups are compostable (assuming you separate the plastic lid) *if* you have a municipal green bin program (this was the case a year ago as well). Fortunately, the green bin has marched its way across the Greater Toronto Area, and use is soon to be mandatory in the city itself.
In these parts (Kitchener-Waterloo), I rarely if ever get a strange look if I present my own cup at either Tim Hortons or Starbucks. Then again, I don’t frequent the Tim Hortons. Even if they were a model of corporate environmental responsibility, it wouldn’t change the fact that I find their coffee only marginally better tasting than the dishwater I washed my own coffee maker with at home (and about as strong…)

Thanks for the composting information Johanna, and its nice to see that it is catching on down there. You’ve got several options down there for getting organic, fair trade (or better), very nice coffees down there. I’ve been relying on Equator.ca for my coffee needs. They’ve been very easy to deal with and offer free shipping on their recurring order plan. They offer some very fine coffees indeed. Also check out the Mesa De Los Santos that is offered by Birds and Beans, and outstanding coffee.
