I meant to get a post up yesterday on prizes for the Nunies, but life intruded. It turned into one of those days that kept having different things popping up, intruding on my best laid plans. It was the kind of day that saw me do my morning Yoga at 11:30 last night.
It wasn't, a run off your feet sort of day, just a different one. It started off with a pleasant surprise discovered as I went down stairs to walk with Travis to school. Our new TV had arrived last night and was sitting in the landing waiting. So after walking Travis to school, then stopping at the Nursing Station for a followup cholesterol test I came home and made coffee. Priorities you know, I'd been fasting.
But after that I carried the TV upstairs and started setting it up. I pondered on how different TVs are now. Our last TV, which we were selling in part because I couldn't bear the thought of carrying it up the stairs here, was a 36 inch CRT. Safely it takes four people to carry, heavy and huge. The new TV is a much larger HD LCD. I easily brought it up stairs myself. And I must say, we watched BBC's Earth on blu-ray last night, it is (for want of a better description) an experience.
The other main surprise yesterday was I was a day off. I thought it was the 6th yesterday, Ukrainian Christmas Eve. I spent much of the day in the kitchen. Traditionally, for my family, Ukrainian Christmas Eve is much about the meal. And traditionally that means 12 meatless dishes. But I'm not that ambitious. So I did four, from scratch. Holopchi (cabbage rolls), pedohay (perohgies), fasuli (mashed beans) and kutia (boiled wheat). It started on Monday, soaking the wheat and beans. But it took much more time then anticipated, and ate up much of my days.
There were other things along the way, I had about three "you live where???" conversations, saw my to do list grow, instead of shrink etc etc.
But the prizes, ah prizes. First of all I will have a prize for all three categories. Right now I plan on a book of black and white photos of Arctic Bay taken by me. But I'm not sure if that is too self-aggrandizing and indulgent, so I'll hedge my bets. If any of the winners would prefer, I'll send them a knit Arctic Bay hat instead.
There have also been a couple of other prizes donated. Indigo is donating a carved soapstone inuksuk from Cape Dorset for Best New Post, and Jen is donating a personalized logo and mug for Best Post. If anyone else wants to donate a prize let me know and I'll post it here.
One other note about prizes. I always offer a badge for the winners to post on their blogs, but I'm going to have some difficulty doing it up this year. My photoshop program got corrupted in the transfer to my new computer and I can't find the discs to reload it. I'm working on the problem though and they should eventually be done.
