Oscar Peterson, one of the true Greats of Jazz, died today in Missisauga. Probably more than anyone else he drove my appreciation of Jazz piano. He apparently said, when Duke Ellington died, "I see no reason to mourn for Duke Ellington the musician, because he was a prolific talent who left behind a legacy of great music". So in that regards I’m not mourning Oscar Peterson tonight, but I do mourn for those who will never be able to hear him perform in person, and that no more music will be added to his great legacy.
Play on Oscar, your music will live forever.

His talent was known around the world.
Awesome talent, and I don’t use that word lightly. Many years ago I recorded an extended interview with Oscar, the interviewer was Andre Previn. The interview was punctuated by Oscar playing some of his pieces, and using the piano to illustrate points he was making. I still listen to it from time to time with enormous pleasure, great pianist, great man.
Clare, it was so neat to hear from you–it has been a long while. I read part of your blog and blog history–really enjoyed it. Brought back my own memories of wonderful and exciting times in the north, but not quite the north that you are experiencing. You have a wonderful family and a wonderful business. Exciting life!! Thank you for keeping in touch–will email our xmas letter soon. Jeanette
Thanks Dave and Duncan. He was a prodigious talent for sure.
Great to hear from you Jeanette. Its been far too long. Looking forward to keeping in touch.
I was pretty saddened to hear of Peterson’s passing. I have fond memories of him playing at my university convocation in ’99. He will be greatly missed.
That would have been pretty special Darcy.
