Well, I finally waded through the fifty shortlisted videos for the Best Job In The World, and my enthusiasm has waned somewhat. I clearly caught some of the best videos when I started viewing them all. There are some great videos there but there are also some moments when you go "That got you shortlisted?". A couple things have jumped out at me.
First of all fully one in five of the shortlisted videos is from a Canadian, or someone closely tied with Canada. There are eight videos identified as Canadian, and Kat from Greece holds a Canadian passport. Heck Kim, from India, was the co-host of Daily Planet. She almost gets my (coveted) vote for that alone. Clearly we either excel at this thing or some sort of desperation to escape somewhere warm shines through and impressed the judges. And, to be honest, some of the best most imaginative videos come from the Canadian entries. Heck, this guy Mitchell did a sort of Broadway production number.
Julie, from Russia, is under the delusion that sexuality will get her through with her pseudo porn star slick production number. Oh, she's in second place in the voting with some 44,000 votes. Maybe she's not deluded, although one hopes the selection committee won't be. And Mark from the US, I can't quite make up my mind if I desperately want to be his best friend, or if I hate the perfection of it all. I think I have a man crush on him, which leaves me questioning a lot of things. I even enjoy the current voting leader's video. She's a woman from China with an engaging smile and a man's name.
Sigh, who to vote for? I just can't make up my mind. Even with this guy's sortable spreadsheet that rates all of the shortlisted candidates. This would have been so much easier if they'd just picked Michael in the first place.
