While I waited at the cabin, two members from Southend Detachment headed south while the rest of our members headed north. Half of the ER Team continued on up the road while the other half stopped to clear the cabin. While I waited for them to arrive (they take a very long long time moving through the bush to the scene) events started to unfold up north at Mickey’s Camp. My role in the drama was over though, for after ERT was finished, I was ordered back to the detachment where I briefed the Staff Sergeant and the Officer Commanding of Prince Albert Subdivision, then I went home to rest as it was now close to midnight.

Mickey’s camp is a roadstop north of La Ronge on the shores of McLennan Lake, a truly beautiful part of the country.  There is a gas stop and restaurant and cabins for rent. The original owner was in his eighties at the time of the incident and the place was run by his son. It was here that the Southend Detachment members arrived and quickly set up a road block. They had just arrived when the car that had picked up the hitchhiker pulled up.  As it stopped at the roadblock, Jonny jumped out of the car and began running back beside a semi that was behind them.  As the two members began to follow him, he pulled out the handgun and pointed it at them, threatening to kill them.

At the same time, the other members, that had been with me at the cabin, arrived at Mickey’s camp. When he saw them he turned and ran to the cabin complex behind the main building.  He hid behind a cabin, gun drawn, and waited for them to follow. Luckily the members held back, deciding to await the rest of the ER Team which was following close behind.

When no one immediately chased him Jonny went inside an open cabin, which was being used by one of the staff.  Finding no one there he quickly rifled through it, stealing a couple of hundred dollars there. Then he noticed a small boat and motor pulled up on shore.  As the ERT were working their way through the camp, they heard the motor start up a ways off shore.

To be continued…
