Hmm, Good AND Obscure.

Tony, of Milkriver Blog fame, is both tireless, and adept and coming up with ideas that get people involved, and perhaps to look at things a little different, you know, view askew (and yes, that is a reference to one of my favourite film makers).  Now he has come up with a challenge, a meme, for all of his many contacts.  He wants people to post on a movie (at least one), that they think is amongst the best they’ve seen that most people wouldn’t have heard of.  And it is a challenge, for although I know of many good obscure films, I’m not sure that they are either 1) The Best, or 2) so obscure.  But here are a couple, or three. And again, just for the record the best film ever is Casablanca, and who hasn’t heard of it (and by the way it was released on this date in 1942).

1)  Atanarjuat – A very good movie, and one I have seen over and over again, partially because of where I live, and the fact that everyone up here will turn it on when ever it is on TV, regardless of when they last saw it.  I’m not sure that it is that obscure though, it did garner quite a bit of press.
2)  Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) – I really enjoyed this film and it is pretty obscure.  I think part of my enjoyment is that it explores a theme I’m found of, that a few seconds can make a big difference in your life.  Basically the movie loops through the same set of scenes over and over, but a small delay each time dramatically changes the outcome.
3)  I liked Whalerider that Tony nominated, but as he nominated it I’ll pick another film from New Zealand that is very good (and again I’m not sure if it is really obscure, maybe it is the circles I run in), and that is Once Were Warriors.  Powerful.

So that’s it.  Feel free to add to it, Tony is compiling the recommendations in his post, so link to it or let him know that you’ve posted on the theme.  I’m sure I’ll be seeing all those videos at the Northern Store real soon. Yeah.
