Sea water freezes at about -3C, and up here the water is never really far from that temperature. As a result, even more than a month before we can expect Arctic Bay to freeze, on calm days without a lot of direct sun ice can start to form. This picture was taken this morning and as (I hope) you can see there is a lot of ice forming. This is called Grey Ice, and sometimes when a little more progressed Pancake Ice.
Winter is just around the corner.
And as a bonus, here is a picture of a couple of the House ravens from this morning.

Hints of winter already? Here we’re already into Spring; I’m relishing the lengthening days, the increasing green, the spring blossom on old, self-sown fruit trees, birds beginning to nest. But I’m restless… I think I’m not so much migratory as vagrant, and these photos of yours, particularly that of the ravens, only increase that desire to be moving on. I love that photo; even if I didn’t feel like this, it would move me deeply in its simplicity and metaphor.
I love coming here and seeing something of your world. I think I understand why you said you’re so lucky to live where you do. Thanks, Clare.
Hi Pete,
Pretty strong hints actually. Woke this morning to snow on the ground. Just a dusting, and everything lower down is gone, but it won’t be long now.
You know we’d be happy to have a restless vagabond from New Zealand anytime Pete. Come on up.
