The official opening of the new Airport in Arctic Bay happened yesterday. The Premier, the Minister of Economic Development and Transportation and other dignitaries flew in and had a short ceremony there. Then the main event, speeches, cultural entertainment and a country food feast took place at the Community Hall. Unfortunately I never made it to any of the events.
But, in many ways the opening marks a new dawn here in Arctic Bay. So here is the dawn over the new airport, just out of sight over the hill.

That’s fantastic news! Having an airport so much closer to town, and in a more weather-friendly area, will be great. I guess it will not be so great for the taxi company though.
It certainly is a quicker trip out to the airport now Nancy. Although we’ve still had several flights miss. There is now at least the chance that Canadian North will come here now and our prices will drop somewhat.
I believe the Taxi costs about half of what it did, but they’ll have less expense also.
beautiful photograph….
and good news on airport access…will make life better and easier.
Thanks Tara.
Glad to hear that the airport is up and running. After all the delays I was beginning to wonder. I don’t think a lot of people truly appreciate just how important good airport infrastructure is when you are in such an isolated community. Here’s hoping this will lead to fewer missed flights and perhaps and additional air carrier.
