  • All Hallows Eve

Halloween was celebrated here on October 31st. Now I realize that that sounds redundent, but Halloween isn’t always on the 31st here. If, for instance Halloween falls on a Sunday, it is rescheduled to the Saturday (can’t be celebrating ancient Celtic holidays on the sabbath don’t you know). Halloween here differs in a couple of

  • Kautaq Joseph (c1930-2005)

One of Arctic Bay’s Elders, and one of my favourite people, died this evening here in Arctic Bay. Kautaq Joseph was a fantastic woman, born around 1930, with sparkling eyes and a ready smile, a truly beautiful woman. She had lived in Arctic Bay (the community) longer than anyone else, having moved here when she

  • The Walk To Work

It’s dark now on the walk to work, the landscape is no longer in focus but is a silouette against the sky. The sky glows! On the eastern horizon it is incredible shades of orange, quickly darkening to blues and then to black. The ciel is pierced with bright points of light. Light billions of

Because you wanted to know about the effect of wind on the sea ice… Before the wind, and (unseasonably) warmer temperaturesAnd after them. Rough travelling at least to Adam’s Sound this year…

  • Fall?

The Fall Equinox has just passed us. I guess it is fall now, although it feels like early winter. What the coming of the equinox means to us in real terms is that we now have less sunlight than almost everyone else.  In North America the only communities with less sun than us would right

  • Fill’er up

The fuel ship arrived last night, bringing with it a year’s worth of gasoline, and heating fuel for Arctic Bay.  It is still anchored out in the bay, so I can only assume that the transfer of fuel has yet to finish. The transfer is done with a boom, a large hose that is floated

It’s snowing pretty good right now, and starting to accumulate on the ground.  Don’t imagine this will stay but it is that time of year.  Travis sure was excited.  Me? Not so much. There are still decks to build outside, and siding to finish up. Later today…still some snow, but the sun’s out.
