I thought maybe I do a couple of Meme’s that have been kicking around lately. It just seems like that sort of weekend.
The first is the Random (or Last) Ten Songs Meme. I picked this up at Townie Bastard, although I’ve seen it kicking around for some time now. I think it was originally meant for the last ten songs you listened to in Shuffle mode of an iPod. Now I don’t own an iPod (Leah does and while there is some of my music on it, it is mostly her’s) and I rarely listen to anything on shuffle. Usually (a consequence of growing up with vinyl LPs I imagine) I listen to whole albums at a time, but not always. At any rate, here are the last ten songs I listened to (from my "Kinder Gentler mix" on the laptop, pumped through remote speakers in the kitchen).
10) Oh Sweet Nuthin’ — Velvet Underground
9) And It Stoned Me — Van Morrison
8) Train Wreck — Lucinda Williams
7) Most Of The Time – Bob Dylan
6) Without Expression — John Mellencamp
5) Let’s Get it On — not Marvin Gaye but the Jack Black cover from Hi Fidelity (yes that Jack Black)
4) Lovers in a Dangerous Time — again a cover, the Barenaked Ladies
3) Peace Train – Yusuf Islam (the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens)
2) No Woman No Cry — Bob Marley (it would be impossible to cover)
1) Indifference of Heaven – Warren Zevon
There you go.
The other meme is the Birding Survey, that orginated with The Hawk Owl’s Nest, and done by Mike of 10,000 Birds and nuthatch (Hi blogmom!) of bootstrap analysis among others.
What state (or country) do you live in? Arctic Bay, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada
How long have you been birding? Well I describe myself as a birdwatcher, not a birder, so essentially all of my life.
Are you a “lister”? Not really, I do keep a life list, which woefully needs updating.
ABA Life List: no idea, maybe three hundred
Overall Life List: No idea. I suppose I could go and count, perhaps six hundred.
3 Favorite Birding Spots: My deck, whereever I find myself, the Ice Bridge landing at Fort Providence.
Favorite birding spot outside your home country: Right now, Pete’s Pond Botswana but perhaps that doesn’t count because its a webcam. The Sierra Maestras Cuba or Antarctica. Oh wait, the Galapagos Islands.
Farthest you’ve traveled to chase a rare bird: The dump at Arctic Bay for a White-crowned Sparrow, that would be about 2 kilometres, maybe three. At least it wasn’t crowded with other twitchers.
Nemesis bird: Sabine’s Gull.
“Best” bird sighting: The two Raven’s that were just tumbling through the air outside my livingroom window.
Most wanted trip: Atta Island so I can win the Big Year. No wait that’s someone else. Umm. Duncan’s neck of the woods, or barring that anywhere with Charlie Moores
Most wanted bird: Dodo, or perhaps the Passenger Pigeon.
What model and brand of bins do you use?: Mountain Equipment Co-op 8X42’s
What model and brand of scope do you use?: None, it would have been a Bushnel Elite had some postal worker at the main sorting plant in Toronto not stolen it.
What was the last lifer you added to your list?: Bee Hummingbird. Maybe.
Where did you see your last lifer?: In a Cactus Garden not too far from Guantanamo Bay actually.
What’s the last bird you saw today?: Hmmm. Winter in the Arctic… could it be… Raven.
Best bird song you’ve heard ever: Redwing Blackbird. No wait, Western Meadowlark. No wait, Cuban Solitaire. No wait, Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes – I love saying that). No wait, Cuban Trogan (did I mention that I speak Trogan – pretty much any dialect). No wait, Screaming Peeha. Oh hell I don’t know. Wait. Raven, yeah definitely Raven.
Favorite birding moment: The last one.
Least favorite thing about birding: Huh?
Favorite thing about birding: That I can.
Favorite field guide for the US: Peterson’s, it’s an old friend.
Favorite non-field guide bird book: On the Origin of Species, by Charles someone.
Who is your birder icon?: My son, Travis.
Do you have a bird feeder(s)? No, not for over seven years.
Favorite feeder bird? The first one I really remember, Evening Grosbeaks, hundreds and hundreds of Evening Grosbeaks, although the Pine Grosbeak landing on my hand was pretty cool.
And there you have that.

Great song list.I fondly remember playing the Velvet Undergrounds “Loaded”through the Northern stores stereo system when I worked there in 94′.As for Bob Dylan’s “Oh Mercy” I don’t think it gets any sweeter!
Yeah Great tunes. Now I cringe when I go to the Northern with Travis and they’re playing “Beautiful” by James Blunt. Good tune but I have to rush to cover Travis’ ears in parts.
Were you here with Ian Ross?
Yes, Ian “Sweatpants”Ross was the manager at the time. He still isn’t with the company is he? I have some great photos of myself, Ian, Samson E, and a couple of other characters during sealift. If I ever figure out how to scan them I will email to you.
Thanx
Yes, Ian is the Manager at Cape Dorset now. He is married to my wife, Leah’s, sister Eunice (Samson is her brother of course).
I can’t believe Ian is still with the NWC!He should be getting his forty year watch any day now!How is Samson and what is he doing now? Did he ever marry Heather Oyukuluk?
