The Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up. This annual event (this is the eleventh) is put on by Audubon and Cornell, and takes place on the 15th to 18th of February this year. Traditionally participation in Nunavut has been low, which is not really surprising given the dearth of species in Nunavut in February.
But I’d like to try and change that and I’m challenging all the Nunavumiut who read the House (yeah both of you) to take part. Actually I’d like to challenge all my readers (yeah all five) to take part but this is specifically aimed at those in Nunavut.
Participation is very simple, and you can find all the information you need from the GBBC website. In a nutshell you count the birds on one or all of those days and submit the checklist on line. The website tells you what the parametres of the count are, but if you have questions you can get a hold of me and I’ll try and help. And the checklist submitted this year are eligible for prizes.
The event is built around birding in the backyard, but up here I think I have a pretty big back yard and travel a little farther afield. Make a day of it, get out see some of the country where you live and help these two excellent organizations with one of their citizen science projects.

I’m in! I’ll illegally submit my sightings on behalf of Nunavut instead of NJ if you want, but it’ll throw off the #’s a bit.
I participated in the GBBC last year for the first time–it was a lot of fun, and comparing what I saw with what others reported was very interesting.
It’s a great way to get connected to the birding world!
Hey Patrick, yeah that might skew the numbers a bit. I appreciate the offer, but seeing as I’m the Nunavut reviewer and would have to review all of those “exotic” sightings…
It is fun Nina, and the data is of great use in plotting trends, much the way the CBC is.
