I don’t recall when the last time I watched the Oscars ceremony. I suspect it may have been before I went to University (and no, Casablanca did not win best picture that year, Rocky did). They (the Oscar’s) have just never seemed that interesting to me. I watched this year.
Why the change? I suspect, or rather strongly suspect, that my writing a screenplay (and starting a second) has had something to do with it. And I have to rather sheepishly admit that I did fantasize about what my acceptance speech would have been. I was also interested (there’s that screenplay thing again) in how Diablo Cody would do. I’m quite thrilled that she won Best Original Screenplay. Strange really, as I’ve never seen Juno, or any of her other work, but in the lead up hype (which mostly centred on the stripping thing) I discovered she was a blogger and checked out her blog. Through it all, I discovered that I’ve enjoyed reading her blog and how she seems positively tickled about all this attention in a very non-celebrity sort of way. And she has a sense of humour.
I also had a real Walter Mitty moment when one of the presenters (really big star and producer) came on stage. You see his production company is one of the places I sent the screenplay, and for a moment I lapsed in to a little fantasy of his interrupting his bit to mention a really great Great War drama that had landed on his desk. Alas it didn’t happen.
So there you have it, I’m finally getting sucked in to the cult of celebrity worship. The next post will be about Brittany and Lindsay, I promise. Er, no. Back to your regularly scheduled Raven.

I’m an admitted pop culture junky and I watched the ceremonies too. Juno is a cool movie, especially since it stars Jason Bateman and Michael Cera of “Arrested Development” (and other) fame. “Arrested Development” is a must-see show. The dialogue is a bit forced at times, but it’s a nice movie-watching experience. I was interested in Diablo Cody too. I used to read her blog when she first released her stripper book. I’ll keep an eye out for you at the next awards show. How amazing would that be?
Hey Patrick, I have to say that I’ve never seen “Arrested Development”, guess I’ll have to look it up.
And amazing as it would be to be up there, I’m guessing that the only way I’d get up on the stage would involve a major lapse of security. But one can always fantasize.
Thats Juno, not Juno Beach…
Oh, and here I thought it was a quirky tale of a young pregnant soldier landing on the beaches at D-day.
Nothing wrong in indulging in a little healthy fantasy! We enjoyed the Oscars here too. My kids had never watched it before. My husband was most entranced by the microphone rising up out of the stage. What can I say, we’re easily impressed!
No, a little fantasy is a good thing. I want to know how they had the rising mike the right height for the different people who used it.
I’ve also learned that “Back to your regularly scheduled Raven” can also be a pop culture versus a nature reference. Something to do with Bill Cosby’s TV daughter.
