A couple of things relating to blogging awards. First of all the winners of the Canadian Blogging Awards have started to be announced. So far it is only the Science/Tech Blog winners that have been awarded. Does someone want to explain to me how a blog about Intelligent Design (which is about as far removed from science as you can get) is included in these nominations. Where is Pharyngula when you need him?
More importantly, the Nunies are coming up. At least I think they are. There has been some suggestion that the Nunies combine with awards for NWT and Yukon bloggers to be a Northern Blogging Award. It has also been suggested that they should be a juried (or judged) award as opposed to one based on votes.
Now here are my thoughts on it. Personally, I'd like to keep the Nunies just the way they are. They are after all my baby, but more than that I created them to promote Nunavut Blogging along with Nunavut Blogs! Plus if it were an all northern affair I'd probably have to let my blog stand and I don't think I could handle the rejection of losing.
As one of the main purposes behind them is to increase exposure to the various blogs, both in the nomination process and in the voting. While I think that a juried award might mean more to the winner, and while I think they are a good idea, it just doesn't fit with why I started the Nunies in the first place.
But it isn't cast in stone, I could be persuaded to change my mind. What do you think the Nunies should be? What would you like to see? And hey, we could always have both, the Nunies and the Northernies.

That last idea sounds great- the Nunies and the Northernies! Of course I am sad that I won’t be part of the Nunies this year.
Yeah – Post Darwinist? Give me a break. P.Z. Meyers commented on this a couple weeks back (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/11/whats_wrong_with_those_canadia.php )
There really wasn’t even many credible Science blogs nominated 🙁
The only way I could go for an Arctic Blogging Awards (I like Arctic better than Northern, but that’s me) is if there were still categories for individual territories. So a Best Nunavt Blog, Best NWT, Best Yukon and Best “Northern” (covering non-territory, but still northern blogs that might take place in Labrador, Northern Quebec, Sask, Alberta, etc).
That maybe works. But so do the Nunies. And their your baby, you created them, you’re the boss. If you want to keep them solo, then keep them solo.
And I would keep the voting as opposed to the jury thing. Just watch out for vote stacking
Actually Kara, assuming the criteria doesn’t change you are still eligible. The Nunies use the same criteria as belonging to Nunavut Blogs! which is Come from Nunavut, being a former Nunavumiut, or blogging primarily about Nunavut.
Duckdog. I hadn’t been by Pharyngula in awhile and I missed that post of his. I hope that the people who run CBA pay more attention to enforcing the categories next year.
I think those are all good ideas Craig, I have to admit I often forget about Nunavik and Labradour in this north thing. Then again my idea of “north” keeps evolving. There is also the rest of the circumpolar world to consider too. Vote stacking is an issue for sure, I really wish people wouldn’t take these things that seriously. I’m probably going to look for a new poll provider also. Perhaps Polldaddy.
By the way, I think it was you who commented on wishing they posted their numbers. If you do a search for “Blog Awards” on Polldaddy.com and then select the CBA people, you can get the number of people who voted. In most categories it was under 1000, Best Blog was up around 3,000 I believe.
I like the idea of having both. Maybe NWT could have its own awards again this year and we could all join forces at some point for the Northernies. Or whatever we call it.
My vote is to do the Nunies separately but if we do a Northernies…we should call it the Northies…lol. Someone else should run the Northies so you can be involved, you wouldn’t need to worry about the rejection of losing. I think your blog would win in fact! I vote Megan for doing the Northies because she is a hawk at watching the stats. That or she can run it in a vote system like she had suggested, then her blog can also be involved. I’m up for helping any way I can. 🙂
Ferry Tales. Perhaps both is a good idea.
Jen, I definitely think that we’ll need to get more people involved if we add a more encompassing northern/arctic/you live where? award thingy.
I agree too – I think this is a pretty cool and coherent blogging community that deserves its own awards. Especially, since so many people follow several of the Nunavut blogs regularly which would mean that the votes would more frequently be a comparison between two known blogs rather than for a vote for the only one you read. At least that is how my own voting in the Canadian Blog Awards went, seeing as I didn’t have time to read all of the ones nominated, and certainly not over an extended period. Besides.. you can’t be “Nunies” for an award name. Thanks Clare for organizing both the community and the awards.
You’re quite welcome Jennith.
