The Raven, Edgar Allen Poe's incredible poem was first published on today's date, one hundred and sixty-four years ago. Poe still rocks. Really. Take some time today and read some of his works. Might I recommend The Tell-Tale Heart, or A Cask of Amontillado.

The Tell-Tale Heart is one of the first cases I can think of where I read something in a school text and really liked it. I was so used to picking up my own reading material because everything they taught in school was boring.
But to read that story was a revelation. It was like, “wow, they can teach you cool stuff in school.”
Several years later I was forced to read “Lure of the Labrador Wild” and had that illusion thoroughly shattered.
I always loved “The Cask of Amontillado.” When I was in the 4th grade, I tried to write a story in the fashion of Poe. I got an A, and the teacher read it to the class. I’ll never forget that moment. I was a big Poe fan after that!
Tell-Tale Heart was the 1st Poe’s story I’ve read. And my favorite ones are “A pit and a pendulum” and “William Wilson”
Poe is a great author I think it’s ime to reread his stories as well as Lovecraft’s..
They are great stories aren’t they Craig. Strangely I enjoyed many of the works we took in school. Books like All Quiet on the Western Front and The Last Canadian I found to be really good reads. Even the poetry we took was (for the most part) good, although I always bristled at the idea that the teacher had the only proper interpretation of the poem. It brought out my only rebellious streak.
For some reason I never discovered A Cask of Amontillado until University Robin Andrea. I went searching it out after listening to the Allan Parsons Project.
Those are both great stories Aluajala. The one story I never really cared for of his, was a Novella about a trip to the Antarctic and the strange world found there.
Beautiful. The Raven is one of my favorite poems. I read it to my students at Halloween time each year. They may not understand it but they do enjoy it! Good stuff!
