Ohh the 100-400 is a nice lens .. especially if you can get it with the IS option. I’m debating right now if I want to sell my XTi and upgrade to a XSi (with IS) or 40D/50D or switch over to a Nikon D80/90/200 .. but then again there is that 17″ MacBook Pro that I am lusting over night now.
M&M, the lens is the 10-22 USM (Canon) f3.5-4.5
Kennie, I just saw an excellent article comparing the Canon and Nikons on line. If I was going to get another I’d go with the 5D Mark II. There is a reconditioned 17 inch available for only $1600.
I’m enjoying it thus far Megan, although I think I’d get more use out of the bigger lens.
I have no problems with reconditioned Apple products. Everyone of our iPods with the exception of the first is a reconditioned one. Leah’s MacBook is also one (yes it has an issue, but that is from a liquid spill). My next Mac will likely be. They come fully warranteed and available for AppleCare. Often they are returns for very minor problems that are then resolved. Or left over “previous models”
A fully functioning MacBook Pro for about $1000 less than the price of a “new”? I’m amazed more people don’t take advantage of it.
Nice lens…
But I’d like to comment on your new header as it might seem a bit strange to have a grave as the header to a blog.
I like it very much though.
When you go out and seek solitude in nature – one of the most valuable experiences – you make a conscious decision about the gains and dangers and you know each time you leave that you may not be coming back.
But as it is a conscious decision, you accept the dangers and they thereby lose their frightening aspect. And death is something that one would of course still fight back with all one’s might but accept more peacefully if it was found to be inevitable.
Okay, I may add as an explanation to this somewhat strange comment that I spent an entire year hiking 600 square kilometres of African bush mostly alone and being the only human on that area. It has had a strong influence on me for sure, and your post on where the Gyrfalcon wasn’t really brought back that beloved feeling: from raising your cup to getting your foot free.
It is a great post you wrote there, Clare, and a great land you’re living in.
Hey Jochen,
Yes it is an unusual choice for a header I’ll admit, and I did wonder about putting on there. Essentially the criteria I use for the header photo is that, first of all, I have to like the photo and think it has some merit. Then it has to be fit a Northern theme or be about the House. So on those levels it works. I like the photo and to me the “lonely grave” is a persistent Arctic Theme. Either that or it is signalling the demise of the blog, or something.
Thanks for your thoughts on solitude and safety or the danger of travelling alone. Well thought out and articulated. I am curious to learn more about your trek in the African bush. Tell us more, more.
Well, Clare, I am planning to write quite a few posts about my time in Africa in the future, but then I first have to digitalize a few thousand slides and resolve what one could call “sleeping issues” of my youngster to make more time for blogging (or digitalizing said slides).

Look at all that natural light! Beautiful lens.
Ooooohhh… pretty …. now must figure out a way to “acquire” this lens … 🙂
You are posting lovely photographs Clare, a treat to see.
Thanks Tina, Kennie and Duncan.
I am still lusting after the 100-400 though Kennie, but this looks like it will be some fun.
Hey Clare.
What type of lens did you get?
Pics are nice.

Good choice! I love my 10-22!
Previously owned Mac??!! Never! Someone else touched it .. it’s contaminated! 🙂
