Alright, I'm finally getting around to posting Leah's photos from the Traditional Clothing contest from the Nunavut 10th birthday celebrations up here April 1st. There are a lot of photos to post, so I'm going to just post them and not a lot of narrative, I'll be happy to try and answer any questions you might have in the comments.
Here is part of the line up to start you off.
More below the fold…

That last little snowsuit is adorable!
I made a pair of caribou kamiiks with the help of some amazing elders while in Kugluktuk. You would not believe the compliments I get on them over here in the Yukon! I miss sewing with those women.
If I were of childbearing age, that white on white Amautiq would be my choice!
WOW!! a feast for the eyes for sure. The big puffy parka/atigi?? ….is it wolf? And the polar bear pants – sweet. I liked the wine/black amouti/parka in with all the more traditional caribou furs…..the new traditional I guess. And the white on white amouti was quite beautiful in its simplicity. It was very interesting for me to see the different styles as I have never visited AB. No ivory toggles in evidence like the Hall Beach/Igloolik ladies. And almost all caribou kamiks, not so much sealskin.
Thank you Clare, you made my day.
Hi Kara,
That is the same little girl, whose picture I posted on April 1st. There are some incredible kamiks sewn up here. My MIL has a pair in the Bata Shoe Museum.
It is very pretty isn’t it allmycke.
You’re welcome indigo. The woman who made the wine/black one (the fabric is better seen up close, the black are roses) makes some very beautiful amautiqs. There are a lot of seal kamiks, but I think for this people were wearing “their best” and people like the look of caribou rather than seal in general. The puffy parka, I believe, is dog not wolf.
