In a box of books that arrived today (courtesy the wonderful Indigo – Thank you) was a Winter 1959 edition of The Beaver, with an article about Arctic Bay written by Margery Hinds. Hinds was one of the earliest teachers up here, and the article contained several photos taken by her. Including this one…
Now I'm not sure, but I believe that this is a photo of a friend of mine, Lew Philip, who retired recently from the RCMP, and lives in Iqaluit. I just heard that he is in town, having snowmobiled up from Iqaluit. I'll have to try and track him down.

I’ve met Lew a few times…. it sure does look like him.
Ugh, snowmobiled from Iqaluit to Arctic Bay? As in 1,300+ KM?
I’m pretty sure it is him Kent, I hope to get together for coffee this week and will find out for sure.
Yes, at least 1,300 kms Marc. Probably more, they went up the west side of the island, into the Foxe Basin and up from there. They had made an attempt a year or two ago but ended up with equipment problems. When I find the details (kms/time) I’ll try and remember to post it here.
Quick update: The photo is indeed Lew, and the snowmobile trip was about 1900 kms, and took 7 days.
