The last little while, in addition to marveling at the incredible amount of hair Bolt is shedding, I've noticed that he has been packing on the pounds. Bolt has grown to be quite a pudgy dog. I put it down to a recent change in dog food that we've given him. I was startled, though about how quickly it happened, and said that we had to cut down how much we fed him.
A couple of days ago, I looked out and saw that once again he had his lead tangled around his hind foot. It happens regularly, thanks to his habit of chasing his tail. His wolf ancestry is close to the surface at meal times, and shows itself as he keeps competing members of the pack away from supper. Only in this case the competing members of the pack happen to be various parts of his own body, such as his hind legs or tail. At any rate sometimes this results in his leg getting tangled up, and I have to go an extract him from the mess.
Now normally I lay him across my knees on his side, so I can pin him there and work at the rope. Often the rope hurts him as it comes off so I need to immobilize him to get it off, or else he just wants to play and I still need to immobilize him to get the leg free of the rope.
So as I was freeing him this time, I suddenly found the reason why he's gained so much weight. "He" has quite obviously swollen teats, and is quite obviously very pregnant. And apparently not a "he".
I could have sworn this dog had a penis when she was a puppy.

hahaha that’s hilarious! Looking forward to the puppy pictures! 🙂
Blame your slight oversight on the thick fur…
I could understand the confusion in a kitten as the genitals are not that easily identified but a puppy! At least “Bolt” is an asexual name.
Oops. Well, nursing the pups ought to take care of any weight she’s gained. Definitely time to make sure she’s got plenty o’nutrition. Have you whelped pups before?
Ahahahaha! We met a puppy at the campground this past weekend and even though I turned, um, IT over, I couldn’t tell. (Is that little wee thing there a penis or just an odd clump of fur?) I don’t blame you at all. 🙂
Keen powers of observation you have going there, my friend…
That really is way too funny!!!!
Oh my gracious. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t laugh. Oh, yes I should. Ahahahahahaha! Have fun being a puppy grampa!
Too funny, Clare. We specifically got a female puppy because I’ve always been a bit weirded out by the large sheath in the middle of a male dog’s belly, but I was surprised when we got Raven home and discovered the females have a not entirely dissimilar cone of flesh back between their hind legs. Also, around Raven’s belly-button, where the hair changes direction in which way it grows, it creates a tuft of hair that, on a medium-haired dog like a Husky or similar, could be possibly mistaken for a male’s sheath with just a quick glance. So I won’t laugh too hard at your mistake, just a little. 😉 Puppies are adorable, though. As long as you can find homes for them all, they’ll be fun to raise. And a great experience for your kids.
My husband will be very glad that we are not neighbors or I would be running home with a puppy under my jacket..or maybe two!
Congrats grampa!
OH DEAR…..this is a long way from a guy who swore several years ago never any dogs in his household!
Too funny!
That’s quite a delightful surprise. Good thing Bolt is a name that works either way. Congrats to the whole family. The kids must be thrilled!
Thanks all, I’m blaming it on the fact that she’s really a hyena, and they all appear to be the same sex.
And Bonnie, I’m not sure that I swore that, but I definitely never imagined that one would be allowed, given Leah’s fears. She’s actually quite attached to Bolt, from outside the range of Bolt’s leash. She’s still not quite comfortable enough to go and scratch her tummy.
