Last weekend I decided to take a plunge and start the crown moulding in one of the rooms. It is guest room #3, but we know it as Gary’s room, as he had staked his claim on it before there were even walls on the second floor.
Now the Crown moulding is supposed to be a surprise for Gary when he arrives back here on Monday. Of course it won’t be much of a surprise if he checks the blog between now and then, in which case.. "Surprise". I’m still not a hundred percent sure why I attempted this project, I’ve never done any crown moulding before (except the cupboards which are a different style) and don’t have my mentor to guide me.
It took me a little over two days to do the moulding, and for the most part I think it looks pretty good. There is one outside corner that pulled away after I had it up and I’ll have to figure out how to fix it up (or rather I hope Gary doesn’t make me pull it off the wall and that he’ll have a quick and easy solution for me). I learned some things (like where not to start the first piece), and had a good stairmaster work out, going back and forth to the dining room where the mitre saw is. I had to make several trips each joint, adjusting the cut to make it fit as nicely as possible. The saw, and some instructions with it took the guess work out of setting the right angles for each piece, and it was just a matter of small adjustments. Glue and a nail gun, and lots of patience and crown moulding in one room is finished. Lots more to do.

That looks really nicely done. I’ve heard of how hard outside corners can be, and the simple fact that I cannot measure and cut lumber means that I have even more respect for you now than I did before!
I love crown moulding! Your place is really looking awesome, Clare.
Looks great. Don’t you want to come south and help us when we build our house? 🙂
That crown moulding looks fantastic. Great job, Clare. One question: What time of day were the pictures taken? The view out the window is very dark, and the lights are on inside.
Thanks y’all. I’d love to come and help Swamp4me. Sure would love to spend some time in that swamp. It looks like a fascinating place. Buuuttt… I think I’m hanging up my hammer for a little while after this is done.
RD, the picture was taken at 10:30 in the morning. It is lighter out than it looks through that window. If you zoom in on the window you can just make out the glow over the mountains in the background. The lights are always on this time of year when we are inside working. And it is so nice just hitting a switch instead of finding a halogen light (that works) and plugging it in. Easier on the budget also.
That looks really great Clare.
I’ve put up molding exactly once. I learned that a 99 in Geometry was not enough to make me as good at molding as I assumed it would…
