When I was small my mother would sing a song called My Grandfather’s Clock to me. Well to all of us really. It is a rhythmic song, one that children find very soothing, and very grounding. I now sing it for Hilary and sang it for Travis when he was a baby and toddler. There is just something about the song.
This is actually my Grandfather’s Clock.
In fact it is my Grandfather and Grandmother’s clock. It was a wedding gift for them, I wish I knew who from. I believe they got married in 1920, so it is at least 86 years old. It was made by the Sessions Clock Company of Conneticut, a company which no longer exists. Like the song, the sound of its rhythms are very soothing, although it is a little noisy unless you’re used to it, chiming as it does on the hour and half-hour.
Perhaps one day it will sit prominently in Travis or Hilary’s place, ticking away as they sing to their children. It is strangely comforting to think of such a continuance of rhythms passed down through the years. Almost as comforting as my mother’s singing.

Great to see Grandpa and Grandma’s clock again and read about your memories of it. Just checked their wedding invitation – they were married in 1921.
My grandmother had a clock very much like that one. I don’t know what became of it. I can still picture exactly where it was in her living room. It is quite a lovely sense of continuity to think of your children someday having their great-grandparents’ clock ticking in their houses, as well as their hearts.
Clocks such as Howard Miller grandfather Clock do have their own way of evoking special memories. 🙂 I share the same sentiments with you all.
