The Sun is is shining on my laptop screen right now, which (through a rather convuluted process) made me realize that today is the Vernal Equinox. March Equinox if you prefer and don't want to be North Americancentric. Now while that doesn't mean that Spring has arrived here, far from it. It does mean that for the next six months we'll have more sunlight than you. Or at least those of you who live south of here, which would pretty much mean everyone reading this. And apart from Russia, that would only leave about 400 people who live further north, hogging even more sun.
So for the next six weeks we'll see ever increasing amounts of the Sun. In about a month's time, even though the Sun will still be setting we will, for all intents and purposes, have 24 hour light. But around the 8th of May the Sun will no longer set, and for the next three months it will simply circle us in the sky.
Many people find the 24 hour light harder to adjust to than the dark season. I'm not one of them. I never mind the dark season, but boy do I love the 24 hour sunlight. I love being able to go for a hike at 3 in the morning if I so desire. I love how much living you can pack into a day. And having had the circadian rhythm beaten out of me with a life time of shift work, I have no problems sleeping when it is bright out.
Bring on the Sun, I'll be here enjoying it. And gloating, just a little bit.

Haha! I give you permission to gloat about having more sun than us. 😀 I prefer warmth anyway. There will also come a day when I will (hopefully) live somewhere MUCH warmer than here, and hence most likely more equal amounts of sunlight throughout the year anyway. I quite like 12 hr days…I don’t think I need 24 hr sunlight, nor would I like less than 9 hrs of daylight. (9 is cutting it close, but it’s still manageable).
Happy sun! 😀
You definitely live in a land of extremes. I guess it takes an extreme personality. It must be nice to look forward to what the days of sun will bring.
I’ll be north of you soon, heading to Grise in 3 weeks or so. I think the sun stops setting there on April 26 or maybe even sooner… I’ll try not to gloat. 😉 I love the 24 hour daylight too. I find my sleep more disrupted by the arctic winter, interestingly.
I’m not sure I can do warmth anymore Melodie. Typically we are around 8-10 degrees here in the summer, occasionally higher up to 12 or even 14. But it feels much warmer than the air temperature would have you believe, especially if you are sheltered and in the sun.
Yes, the pendulum swings wildly here Emma, but it is all fascinating, and certainly keeps you enjoying all that it has to offer.
Hey Nancy, have a good trip to Grise. Looking forward to reading about it on your blog.
I haven’t been North (of say, Peace River, AB) in the summer – in fact, my farthest north anytime was Whitehorse for Christmas one year (don’t ask). I need sun and I want dearly to experience 24 hour daylight sometime in my near future.
