Arctic Bay has finally frozen over. I thought it was done yesterday however a large swatch of open water openned up in the middle. This makes freeze up (if in fact the ice doesn’t disappear in the next few days) three weeks or so late. Normally by this time hunters would be venturing farther afield by snowmobile. These are strange times.
Another unusual aspect of the freeze up is that, normally, the ice freezes in Arctic Bay moving towards the mouth and then out into Adam Sound and beyond. This year the ice seemed to form in Adam Sound and work its way into the shores of Arctic Bay.
But there is ice out there now, so perhaps we can get on with winter. It feels like it today.
