Today is the 198th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin (and Abraham Lincoln also!). If you’re no longer an ape you have Mr. Darwin to thank. No, not really, but he is the origin of one of the biggest revolutionary leaps in Science, the explanation of the mechanics behind evolution. Sad to say that the logic that embodies evolutionary theory and indeed much of science today is attacked increasingly regularly these days.
In totally unrelated news, my friend Paul Nicklen, has won his second World Press Photo contest in the Nature Stories category, for his Leopard Seal photos. Congratulations Paul!!

Hi Clare,
Your link to Paul’s website doesn’t seem to be working.
Jennifer
I enjoyed Stephen Colbert last night who wished Charles Darwin a happy birthday….in hell!
(Hopefully you know who Colbert is to get the joke)
And yeah, I saw that Paul won that award. Quite the honour…
Hi Jennifer.
I checked the link today and it is working again. It looks like so many people were checking out his website that it exceeded his bandwidth limit.
I’m only vaguely familiar with Colbert, Craig. It is quite the honour for Paul. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
