The night before last Travis, for some unknown reason, said that we should look at the planets with a telescope. Now I’m pretty sure that he didn’t even know that we have a telescope, but it prompted me to get the scope out of the attic and put it together, for the first time since I’ve been to Arctic Bay.
The scope is a 4 inch Dobsonian Reflector and by the time I got it assembled and remembered which end to point into the sky, it was pretty late. We didn’t get much gazing in, and a quick look at the sky didn’t reveal any planets at that time of the night, but we did look at a couple of stars. Tonight though, I’ll have had time to brush up on where everything is and we should do better. Unfortunately, for some strange reason only one of the eye pieces was in the box, the low power one, but it’s a start. I really love the night sky, and hopefully Travis (and Hilary) will share that love. After all, what is the use of a telescope if its still in its box.

As a proud dad myself, I couldn’t agree with your last two posts more! But damn! You’ve already got snow!?! Did it stick?
Damn! Is that thing frozen? And that snow stuck! I am on the southern shores of the Hudson today and its still green here!
Clare, time with a telescope looking at the night sky was one of the great delights of my childhood. I spent night after night drawing maps of the moon and following the movements of Jupiter’s moons. There are notebooks full of my observations.
Could one extend that notion of ‘what good is a telescope if it’s still in the box’ to ‘what good is the long Arctic night without a telescope to explore it’?

My name is Carl Fletcher. I am in my fourth year of studies at the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver, BC. I have taken on a design project and am seeking advice from people who have knowledge and experience in the subject.
My project is to develop some building components in a system that will help to grow plants in the arctic. There are some basic questions that i don’t know the answers to. I wonder if you could assist me?
I am trying to identify if
1)there is a demand for plants
fresh vegetables or other types
2) if there is already common use of greenhouses
3) if so what is there size and type.
4) has this idea already been tried
