It almost escaped my notice this year, but today is the day the sun sets, not to return for the next 3 months. In actual terms the sun will continue to rise at this latitude for another week or so, but because Arctic Bay is surrounded by mountains and hills we’ll not see it here until February.

I’ve never minded the dark season up here. We still get light almost every day, although the week around Christmas will be dark enough for us to see stars 24 hours a day. And the season flies by. Christmas is such a busy and entertaining season up here, what with the games and dances every night for two to three weeks, that before you know it the earth is tilting back towards the sun and our twilight will grow and grow and suddenly the sun has returned.

I wish I had thought of it sooner today, but by the time I realized that today was the day, the sun had already set.  So here’s a picture of the setting sun from a few years ago. Maybe next year I’ll have a little more on the ball.Dsc00584_copy
